Calling back to the house grief
we thought was so bad.
This is worse: we weren’t there
for her last breath.
We should have done more
while she was still alive
before we lost her to death.
Stopped the bad medication
forced her to walk
and drink water,
took away her wine
not lived so far away
visited more often
spent more time.
We didn’t know
what to do
we did the best
we could
we gave as much
as we had
to give.
But is that really the truth?
I don’t know but this holiday
is making me think about
diseases - of depression,
alcoholism and Alzheimer’s - that
I hate, and Ghost of Thanksgiving
past, pointing its bony finger at me:
You didn’t do anything!
You didn’t do anything!
and now it’s far too late.
